Shanklin and Sandown are sea side towns which share the longest bay on the island. Shanklin has unique high ground behind the sea front, View from cliff path Shanklina panoramic cliff top walk partitions the shops from the beach. A public lift is provided to enable easy access to the beach, and to the town shops etc. Shanklin is  a relatively quiet town, which has a cricket ground. The principle industry of the town being tourism.

Shanklin town council currently has fifteen members, with the usual four year period of office. The council is administered by the town clerk.

During the course of its work the Town Council has numerous topics of activity including:- commenting on planning applications received for its area, and dealing with numerous town enquires.

The Town Council is kept fully informed of all Traffic Regulation Orders; Justice Licences; Entertainment Licences; Planning Appeals as well as being fully consulted on a vast array of Isle of Wight Council issues.

Various amenity areas are maintained in partnership with the Isle of Wight Council.

 

The Town Council administers a trust fund that is able to make grants for the welfare of the sick and elderly residents of Shanklin.
